Who celebrates first and last
Time zones mean the new year arrives in waves. Kiritimati in Kiribati, at UTC+14, is one of the first inhabited places to celebrate, and American Samoa, at UTC−11, is one of the last. It takes about 26 hours for every place on Earth to reach midnight.
